Project Details

ICH Director of Research Leah Zallman was the senior author on a study that aimed to understand immigrants’ perceptions of affordability of insurance and knowledge of insurance after health reforms in Massachusetts. For this project, Dr Zallman mentored a Harvard Medical School Student on her thesis. The study, published in the Journal of Immigrant and Minority Health, conducted face-to-face surveys with a convenience sample of 1124 patients in three Massachusetts safety net Emergency Departments after the Massachusetts health reform (August 2013-January 2014) comparing immigrants and non-immigrants. The results of this study raised concern about potential disparities under the Affordable Care Act, which is based on the reforms in Massachusetts.
